Our manufacturing facilities in Geel In October 2001, Genzyme Corporation took over the personnel and assets of Pharming N.V. in Geel, Belgium to develop Genzyme’s first biotherapeutics manufacturing facility in Europe. In a first phase a fed-batch production line was build for the manufacturing of therapeutic monoclonal antibodies. This technology is currently used by Genzyme to produce a therapy for leukemia patients. Regulatory approval for commercial production of this product in Geel is expected in 2009-2010. In the second phase a perfusion production line was build for the manufacturing of an enzyme replacement therapy for the treatment of Pompe disease. This is the first available treatment for this debilitating and often fatal inherited muscle disorder. Regulatory approval for commercial production of this product in Geel for Europe was received on February 25th, 2009. Genzyme’s overall investment in Geel totals €300 million. It currently employs approximately 350 people. |
